Re: “Duke professor Orrin Pilkey takes on the deniers in Global Climate Change: A Primer

As someone in the academic community who lives under the constant threat of funding sources being cut off, it's important to note that our grant proposals must incorporate a sense of doom and gloom. While I'm not in climate science (artificial intelligence in pedagogical systems), we must try to push an agenda that education is failing us and that the only way we pull ourselves from the abyss is by providing our research groups with millions of dollars to fund our research assistants, equipment, etc. I'm completely convinced that many on the climate change side don't actually believe what they're proposing or writing (much as I don't), but they do it just as a way to move forward in their careers. If they become "deniers", they risk not only losing future grant money, but also potentially jeopardize their career advancement.

There is also an interesting irony in how conservatives/libertarians like myself are forced to deal with others in academia. Not unlike gays, we must sometimes remain "in the closet" about our political beliefs until we either a) graduate or b) secure tenure. Until then, we either must "keep up appearances" and pretend to agree with the neo-progressive agenda our colleagues subscribe to, or claim ignorance to politics in general. I wonder if the left will stand up for people like us just as they stand up for those in the homosexual community? :-)
