Drive-By Truckers

When: Fri., March 14, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $25-$28

The luxury of the band Drive-by Truckers is that their latest LP, the 13-song and hour-long English Oceans, ranks firmly in their lowest quartile of releases, yet it still contains some of the richest, realest reflections you'll hear on the rock side of hip-hop. As an album, English Oceans feels a little unfocused and tired—built, at least in part, on scraps, or songs that wouldn't have warranted inclusion on Decoration Day or A Blessing and a Curse. But there's the workaday depression that Mike Cooley renders so exactly during "Primer Coat" or the urban alienation that Patterson Hood delivers over the twinkling acoustics of "Hanging On"—songs good enough that most bands would be content to build entire albums around them. Live, the Truckers remain a force of marathon-like endurance, resurrecting tunes from decade-old albums and delivering them with an energy that suggests they might've been written last week. Blitzen Trapper opens. —Grayson Haver Currin
