Down With Love

When: Fri., April 20, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

One of the most underappreciated comedies of the last decade, Down With Love is also one of the most grossly misunderstood. Critics and audiences alike dismissed this 2003 sendup of the battle-of-the-sexes comedies of the '50s and '60s, dazzlingly directed by Raleigh native Peyton Reed (Bring It On), as nostalgic piffle, the sort of thing only their grandparents would dig. But those who have actually seen the films that Love parodies, mainly the Doris Day-Rock Hudson comedies Pillow Talk and Lover Come Back (which the NCMA screened a few weeks ago), know how dead-on this flick captured the blissful—and kinda deranged—absurdity of those movies. Renee Zellweger slips into the Day role as a single-gal author whose liberating self-help book for women sticks in the craw of Ewan McGregor's caddish, Hudson-like magazine writer, who woos her by pretending to be an astronaut. As kitschy and oddly outrageous as the films it satirizes, Down with Love deserves a cult following. NCMA film curator and Independent Weekly contributor Laura Boyes will introduce the film, which screens at 8 p.m. in the museum's East Building auditorium. —Craig D. Lindsey
