Doug Varone & Dancers

When: Fri., Feb. 4, 6:30-10 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

During a one-week residency hosted by N.C. State, overtly theatrical and literate modern dance choreographer Doug Varone is making a series of appearances in the region before his company's Stewart Theatre concert on Saturday night (visit www.ncsu.edu/centerstage).

For First Friday at Artspace, Varone and his dancers collaborate with fabric artist Andrea Donnelly, whose intriguing Mindbody, a series of large figurative weavings (and reweavings) based on the human body and inkblots, opens tonight. Given Donnelly's focus on amplifying the vastness and vulnerability of "emotional states made visible and physical," this seems an unusually good match. —Byron Woods
