Don't Be Intimidated by This Painting

When: Nov. 4-Jan. 27 2012

You're in luck: This art exhibition of all 17 UNC-Chapel Hill MFA artists, organized by professor elin o'Hara slavick's undergraduate "Curatorial Projects" class, has been extended by popular demand through Jan. 4. Not bad for something put together practically overnight. There were just two weeks from the initial offer of a show by UNC's arts campaign Carolina Collects to its opening night, but slavick's eight students—who also put together the Self, Observed exhibit of self-portraiture showing at the North Carolina Museum of Art through Jan. 22—visited the studios of all the current MFA artists and chose work that displays both their individual talents and the quality of the MFA program overall.

The show gelled around its title work: a painting by Jason Osborne, who just won one of the two prestigious MFA fellowships given annually by the Dedalus Foundation, a national organization founded by artist Robert Motherwell. The names of art students aren't always familiar to the art-viewing public, but this crop of students has been hyperactive in their visibility around Triangle venues. Ashley Florence and Lee Delegard's cardboard snowdrift in Chapel Hill's Local Histories show, Delegard's "Don't Touch the Ground" installation at Durham's Golden Belt and Neill Prewitt's recent performances and video work at Raleigh's Lump Gallery—any of that ring a bell? Don't Be Intimidated features work by those artists and more. Check them out before you have to fly to New York or Chicago to see them. Visit art.unc.edu. —Chris Vitiello
