Don Quixote

When: Oct. 13-30 2016
Price: $32-73

Romance can transform the world. It also can push a disillusioned psyche into a partial or full retreat from reality. Miguel de Cervantes died four hundred years ago this April, but his novel Don Quixote, in which the ideal and the real are in constant conflict, remains the subject of robust debate to this day. When Carolina Ballet's artistic director, Robert Weiss, premiered his take on the Knight of the Woeful Countenance in 2008, INDY critic Kate Dobbs Ariail praised the choreography and strong visual design (including the "clever, charming solutions" applied to horses and windmills), but she dinged narration that told significant parts of the tale instead of depicting them. See if and how the production has evolved at Fletcher Opera Theater this month. —Byron Woods

Various times, $30–$88,
