Novelist Gustave Flaubert said the three greatest things God ever made were the sea, Shakespeare's Hamlet and Mozart's Don Giovanni. The North Carolina Opera takes up the latter for the next week. Spanish nobleman Don Giovanni seduces every woman he sees (the famous "Catalogue Aria" of his manservant Leporello totals the conquests at 1,003), but he must fell Donna Anna's father, the Commendatore, in his effort to add her to the inventory. In a story that questions humanity's relationship to its creator and has the makings of a Jerry Springer episode, Giovanni makes trouble and dodges vengeance during a day that nonetheless ends with inescapable judgment.

Fresh from a triumph in Madame Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera, bass-baritone J.C. Cha takes the title role. And Adam Lau has the pleasure of singing the "Catalogue Aria" as the Don's faithful Leporello. Crystal Manich, who sets 17th- and 18th-century operas in New York bars as Co-Artistic Director of Opera Omnia, directs this fully staged production. 8 p.m., Saturday, April 18 & Friday, April 24; 3 p.m., Sunday, April 19 & Sunday, April 26; 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 22; $25.43-$84.13; 2 E. South St., Raleigh; 919-792-3850;
