Documentary Bringing It Home

When: Sat., June 7, 9 p.m. 2014
Humans have been cultivating it for longer than any other crop. It refines into rope, paper, oil, wax, cloth, food and even fuel. It does not get you high, man. Yet incredibly, hemp remains illegal to farm in most U.S. states, as it's deemed a controlled substance by Federal law. This 52-minute documentary asks why, exploring the long history, domestic politics and global industry of hemp through the story of the nation's first hemp house in—you guessed it—Asheville. Filmmakers Linda Booker and Blaire Johnson, who will be on hand for a post-screening discussion, tout hemp as a nontoxic, energy efficient wonder plant that could assuage global warming, poverty and deforestation; they also give the opposition airtime along with the likes of Dr. Bronner himself. The screening kicks off with live music from soundtrack composer Gabriel de Paz and hemp desserts from Vimala. —Brian Howe
