Doc Hendley

When: Thu., Jan. 5, 6 p.m. 2012
Price: $35 (includes book)

Noted humanitarian Doc Hendley started a series of wine tastings to raise money to provide fresh water for Third World countries and found himself with a firsthand look at the genocides in Darfur and the Sudan. To this day, he continues to work with locals to provide water wells for their villages, a story chronicled in his new book Wine to Water: A Bartender's Quest to Bring Clean Water to the World. This launch event for the book runs 6–7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35, which buys you a signed copy plus wine tastings, food, live music by the Boys From Carolina and a raffle ticket for various prizes, including an overnight stay at Fearrington Inn. (Hendley also will do a free reading at the Regulator Bookshop in Durham on Friday at 7 p.m.

The title of this book reminds us to remind you that when your religious grandfather is visiting for Christmas and you have to cut a loaf of French bread into many pieces for dinner guests, never ever jokingly compare yourself to Jesus. Things will just get awkward. —Zack Smith
