DJ Bro Rabb

"I have been collecting records all my life," says 24-year-old DJ Bro Rabb during a recent conversation. "I started deejaying back in '91, but I always knew how." Bro Rabb might be right: Just as he rarely takes off his 'do rag, he is one of the most consistent DJs here in the Triangle. Rabb and DJ Mike Nice do the "Straight from the Crate" hip-hop show on WNCU every Saturday from 4-8 p.m., and Rabb is also responsible for WXDU's "The Gutter Season Mix Show" on Sunday from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Rabb has just come out with his fifth "World Famous Underground Run" compilation, titled the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The mix CD features tracks from KRS-1, Shabaam Sahdeeq, MOP, Pete Rock, X-ecutioners, De La and Tony Touch, to throw a handful at ya. Bro Rabb flexes his skills, making every song exciting and fresh. And the intro by The Bull City Symphony flows fierce in a full, seven-minute remix kinda way. Then there's "Gotta Have It Again," Royal Flush's take on the classic "I Got To Have It," by Ed O.G & Da Bulldogs.

To be honest, there really aren't any love songs that would fit the Valentine's Day theme, except for "Realize" by L Fudge. Fudge isn't even rapping 'bout a honey either; he spits sick for Queen Hip Hop herself over a dreamy beat. All songs are new and run smooth, but understand: This is underground hip hop, not candlelight dinner music--that's why it's a massacre. You can cop this CD at Four Four Records in Raleigh, Madd Waxx in Durham and Lost World Music and Videos in Chapel Hill.
