DIXIE BE DAMNED: 300 YEARS OF INSURRECTION IN THE AMERICAN SOUTH

THE PINHOOK, DURHAM

SUNDAY, MAY 31

The anarchists at AK Press have just released Dixie Be Damned: 300 Years of Insurrection in the American South. Described as a "radical Southern history," it's the culmination of three years' work by North Carolina natives Neal Shirley and Saralee Stafford. It chronicles sundry Southern uprisings and social movements, from slave revolts to labor battles—anyplace the dispossessed refused to lie down quietly. You know it's an exciting read, with chapter titles like "Ogeechee Till Death" and "Wild Hearts in the Southern Mills." The release party at The Pinhook is fancy attire (although, this being an anarchist event, interpret that as you will), and will feature stories from the authors as well as "thematically appropriate" cocktails, including one called Fuck Manhattan. Surely there will also be one called The Molotov? There are further events scheduled at Scuppernong Books in Greensboro (June 1), The Regulator in Durham (June 3), the Internationalist in Carrboro (June 8) and So & So Books in Raleigh (June 20). 8 p.m., free, 117 W. Main St., Durham, 919-667-1100, www.thepinhook.com.Tom Maxwell
