Throughout his career the artist Edward Hopper explored the visual environments of hospitality services, producing works that are as culturally probing as they are formally beguiling. This lecture explores his Hotel Lobby (1943), a work that suspends viewers between past and present, and between stasis and flux. Leo Mazow is an associate professor of American art history in the Department of Art at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. His book Thomas Hart Benton and the American Sound was awarded the 2013 Eldredge Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in American Art, presented by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
