DISGRACED

PLAYMAKERS REPERTORY COMPANY, CHAPEL HILL

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 16–SUNDAY, OCT. 4

Amir has come far from the circumstances and place of his birth. He's about to make partner at an influential Manhattan law firm, married to a beautiful, ambitious artist, living in a stylish Upper East Side apartment where they entertain important friends. But Ayad Akhtar's 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, which is set at a dinner party that goes very wrong, asks questions just as pointed as those in Young Jean Lee's The Shipment. In 21st-century America, does having Islamic heritage leave one permanently vulnerable to stigmatizing? How much—or how little—does it take for suspicions of religious extremism to be raised, even in the case of a man who has conspicuously distanced himself from his childhood faith? And once those suspicions are aroused, can they ever go away? Guest director Shishir Kurup leads a quintet including Rajesh Bose and Rasool Jahan in a play The Hollywood Reporter calls "a needling reminder that we're not all as mutually tolerant as we like to think." 7:30 p.m. Tues.Sat. (except Sept. 26) and Sun. Sept. 27; 2 p.m. Sun. (and Sat. Oct. 3), $15$54, 150 Country Club Road, Chapel Hill, 919-962-7529, www.playmakersrep.org. —Byron Woods
