Dillon Fence, LowBrow

When: Fri., Nov. 18, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $14-18

The first entry from Dillon Fence on the subscription music site Spotify is a two-disc greatest hits collection titled Best+. For a newcomer to this soulful Chapel Hill rock band, which ended its initial run in 1995, it likely gives the wrong impression. Sure, it lives up to its title in delivering the cream of the Dillon Fence crop. And at least in sound, sequencing and presentation, the collection feels like the work of a band that made it big: Grinding indie rock distortion runs ragged over pure, piercing classic rock guitar lines, lending extra bite. The singing of guitarist Greg Humphreys finds an uncommon middle ground between the mumbling delivery of other Chapel Hill bands in the '90s and dramatic, Motown-influenced tones. Widespread national recognition eluded this Triangle treasure, but enough folks still care for such reunion gigs that the band requires one of the area's biggest rooms. LowBröw opens at 8 p.m. —Jordan Lawrence
