Diamond Rugs

When: Sun., Oct. 28, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

For his new crew, Deer Tick frontman John McCauley recruited bandmate Robbie Crowell and The Black Lips' Ian Saint Pé, plus members of Dead Confederate, Los Lobos and Six Finger Satellite. The side-project Diamond Rugs quickly turned collaborative. On its ragged, retro 2012 debut, the members rotate vocals and songwriting credits as the band straddles the line between poppy garage rock and bluesy alt-country. Along with a solid chunk of the album—and much of Deer Tick's work—the McCauley-led "Gimme a Beer" sounds like a lost Replacements track in more than just name. Meanwhile, Saint Pé's "Hightail" chugs along like a steam train down a track laid by the Sun Records originals. The 9 p.m. show is free. —Spencer Griffith
