Senegalese kora player Diali Cissokho creates a spectacle when he performs, whether by throwing his body on broken glass, playing in wildly acrobatic postures or inviting leaping dancers to the stage. But there is substance to the spectacle. Cissokho is a birthright griot, singing songs of love, family and community that reflect his West African roots and Carrboro home. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
