Dexter Romweber & the New Romans

When: Sat., June 15, 6 p.m. 2013

While they're no stranger to early, outdoor performances, Dex Romweber & The New Romans are definitely a nighttime band. Indeed, Romweber has described the band's sprawling exotica as "lascivious stripper music." But don't alert the censors just yet: As much as The New Romans evoke slinky burlesque and barroom ambiance, their deft concoction of early rock 'n' roll, R&B, exotica and jazz plays like a travelogue of American popular music. Under the leadership of Romweber, a consummate showman and de facto folklorist who has dabbled in classical and reinvigorated rockabilly, The New Romans move easily from speakeasy swagger to big-band majesty. —Bryan C. Reed
