Devil Makes Three, Mandolin Orange

When: Sun., July 24, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $12-14

Combining Tin Pan Alley with Appalachian mountain music, The Devil Makes Three is an upbeat string trio referencing a past that never existed but probably should have. Their music combines punk energy and stream-of-consciousness lyrics; upright bass bounces along to happy, danceable tunes that tend toward the dark and skewed. Openers Mandolin Orange are more prone to indulging in sepia-toned folk, with Andrew Marlin offering quiet reflections in a Damien Jurado mumble as Emily Frantz joins with delicate harmonies. Both groups have albums coming out this fall, offering two thoroughly modern and completely different approaches to folk music. — Andrew Ritchey
