Detroit Cobras

When: Sun., April 21, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $11-13

It's unfortunate that more ink is often spilled over the Detroit Cobras' status as a cover band than over the sultry vocals of frontwoman Rachel Nagy. Her tigress tone pairs well with guitarist Mary Ramirez's slashing old school rock licks. For almost two decades, they've been lighting a fire beneath forgotten '60s R&B, garage and pop, turning the vestiges into colorful Chinese lanterns. Nagy's performances are spirited, like those of Curtis Mayfield, though the same can't be said of their output, which petered out after 2007's Tied & True. They're still great live. —Chris Parker
