Derrick Hodge

When: Wed., Aug. 7, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $18-22
One of my favorite hockey moments came when winger Jeremy Roenick taunted goalie Patrick Roy in an interview. Roy held up his hand to display gaudy championship rings & said he couldn't hear Roenick because "I've got my two Stanley Cup rings plugging my ears." This is how I've come to think of industry awards: bragging rights in the form of bling. But Grammy-winning bassist & composer Derrick Hodge has the chops & talent to go with his trophies. Having recorded with Kanye West, Jill Scott and Floetry, Hodge is touring in support of his latest album, Live Today, which features contributions from Common, Robert Glasper, saxophonist Marcus Strickland and trumpeter Keyon Harrold. The Art of Cool Project co-sponsors the gig with Frolab. Pull the rings out of your ears for this one. —Chris Vitiello
