DEL MCCOURY & DAVID GRISMAN

MEMORIAL HALL, CHAPEL HILL

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14

Del McCoury and David Grisman met more than five decades ago, back when McCoury played banjo with Bill Monroe. But the mutually esteemed acoustic ambassadors have never before toured as a duo, despite occasional collaborations stretching back to the '60s and their individual contributions to the progress of bluegrass. Known best for his work alongside Jerry Garcia in acoustic formats, mandolinist Grisman blurs the lines between jazz, newgrass and world music. Despite his place as the coifed elder statesman of the genre, guitarist and vocalist McCoury pushes the envelope with modern views on bluegrass. While Grisman's gruff vocals don't blend so well with McCoury's high lonesome trademark, his inventive instrumental flair more than makes up for any rough harmonies. Along with cuts recorded in various studio sessions as Del & Dawg, expect the legends to go heavy on traditional tunes they rarely perform on their own. Expect lots of stories—these two have plenty of history to share. 8 p.m., $10$84, 114 E. Cameron Ave., Chapel Hill, 919-843-3333, www.carolinaperformingarts.org.Spencer Griffith
