Defacto Thezpian

When: Fri., Jan. 5, 7 & 9 p.m. 2018
Price: $12

Durham emcee Defacto Thezpian has become a fixture in the Triangle's rap scene with a style all his own, from his distinct flow to his impeccable presence, honed over years of stage training (hence the Thezpian part of his moniker). Defacto's music is exciting—not in the sense of over-hyped, SoundCloud-style screaming, but with well-crafted execution of his rhymes that creates a rhythm that's impossible to ignore. He nimbly links syllables and phrases together with double-time rhyme schemes, slowing it down at times to glue it all together. Listening to Defacto rap is like watching Spiderman web-slinging his way across a skyline: deceptively effortless yet inimitable. Burgundyskylines, released last March, is an exceptional display of his skills, featuring guest appearances from Lil Bob Doe (the Method Man to Defacto's Red Man) and G Yamazawa. —Charles Morse
