Deer Tick

When: Wed., Oct. 6, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $12-14

With his dry, dusty baritone set to the music's world-weary sway, Deer Tick auteur John McCauley possesses the woozy, rootsy allure of an aging front-porch poet. Though he's not yet reached the midpoint of his 20s, the Providence performer's already released three fine albums. Taken together, they showcase a still sharpening songwriting gift that could've been bred in Texas for all its slow dissipation, lingering ache and loneliness against a backdrop of wide-open expanse, faintly echoing Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. After two country-folk discs, he settled on a full-time band to back him on the heartbreak-suffused, '70s-inflected The Black Dirt Sessions. —Chris Parker
