Deep Dark Woods, Be the Moon

When: Sun., April 29, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $8-10

Though it's a good name, Deep Dark Woods is perhaps ill-suited for the band that takes it: They sound more like wide open spaces, fitting for a group whose home on the range is the Saskatchewan plains town of Saskatoon. Their Canadian brand of Americana was impressive enough on a few albums with Six Shooter Records that former Durham indie Sugar Hill picked up 2011's The Place I Left Behind for U.S. release. As for the opener, Mebane's Be the Moon: Songwriter Elliott Humphries might've just been seeking a simple rhyme in "Scenes From a Parking Lot" when he paired "The future's brighter than we thought" with "Happiness cannot be bought," but I can't help thinking he's hit upon a very real message for these times. —Peter Blackstock
