Deep Chatham, Yes Ma'am

When: Tue., May 28, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $5-7

Guitarist Julian Sikes and upright bassist Jeff Loops found fiddle and banjo man Matt Heckle in Talkeetna, Alaska. While that might seem a strange place for a musical crossroads, the connection worked: The three toured their way back to North Carolina, where they recorded under the name Deep Chatham and released 2011's Words From the Well. Recently, the band added piano player Trevor Grassi, pushing their driving bluegrass rhythms and rumbling melodies toward ever greater heights. New Orleans' Yes, Ma'am can most often be found on Royal Street, playing their aged country blues for tourists, locals and the ghosts of the French Quarter. (Both bands also play Wednesday, May 29, at Casbah in Durham.) —Ashley Melzer
