Released in 2002, Bill Morrison's Decasia has become an instant classic of nonnarrative film art. It was constructed from celluloid nitrate film stock dating to the early 20th century, salvaged from basements and archives. Time wasn't kind to these reels: They'd rotted in storage, and the images are scratched, splotched, scorched and smirched, sometimes to the edge of legibility. The film unspools as a procession of spectral images, ghosts of cinema past, paired with a hypnotic soundtrack by Bang on a Can founder Michael Gordon. The score is like-minded in its methods as well as its effect; instruments include out-of-tune pianos and an old, rusted brake drum scraped by a metal whisk.

The result is a fascinating tripartite collaboration between Morrison and Gordon, the creators of the original silent films and blind nature, whose mutilations are unpredictable and eerily beautiful. The 7 p.m. screening, presented by Duke Performances, will be followed by a Q-and-A with Morrison. At noon on Tuesday, Morrison will discuss film scoring with composers from Duke's graduate music program in a free public presentation at Duke's Biddle Music Building. Visit —Marc Maximov
