Death Cab for Cutie, Twin Shadow

When: Tue., Sept. 15, 7:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $25-$45
Chris Walla quit Death Cab for Cutie almost a year ago. Long the band’s secret weapon, Walla wasn’t only a good foil for bandleader Ben Gibbard, or just the band’s longtime engineer and producer. Walla gave the band its language, his delicate production the syntax for Gibbard’s extensive vocabulary. Gibbard’s songs grew broader and blander as the band got bigger, but Walla’s nuanced craftsmanship and deft arrangements buffered flaccid couplets. Without Walla’s glassiness, Gibbard’s pat melodies and nice-guy come-ons on this year’s Kitsungi fall flat. Live, the band might not miss Walla much; in concert, Death Cab was a more straightforward rock band, anyway. But creatively, it’s entirely Gibbard’s show now, and if Kitsungi is any indication, he’s charting the safest course possible toward mediocrity. —Patrick Wall
