Comedy

This is a remake of a so-so 2007 British comedy about a dysfunctional family that gathers for the passing of one of its patriarchs. Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence play sibling rivals at the center of subplots concerning other colorful, eccentric friends and family. Neil LaBute's early brilliance as a purveyor of modern-day misanthropy has dropped precipitously over the past decade. Nevertheless, this film, although far too slapsticky to carry any importance, pays enough attention to social divisions to conjure that discomfiting LaBute edge. Rock and Lawrence wisely practice restraint and leave the hijinks to others, including Tracy Morgan and James Marsden. But, even at a brisk 90 minutes, the premise and scatalogical humor wear thin by the last half-hour. Death at a Funeral is an entertaining farce, but it's hardly the long-awaited revival of LaBute's career.
