Dearloves, Free Electric State, Ye Olde Shoppe

When: Fri., Aug. 3, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $7

Even with a drive through several states separating its members, Free Electric State has never been stronger. The Baltimore-and-Durham-based band's amazing second record, this year's Monumental Life, is a charged, propulsive document. Many of its strongest qualities—the organic crunch of a lightly overdriven guitar, rather than one buried in delay and fuzz; strong three-way harmonies on many songs; memorable, uncluttered melodies—reveal a band that's developed both restraint and patience. Brooklyn's The Dearloves reflect their city's recent resurgence of guitar rock while adding a love of expanded scope and structure. Ye Olde Shoppe opens at 9 p.m.—Corbie Hill
