This charged-but-comical satire and Sundance fave by new director Justin Simien boldly examines race as it focuses on four black students struggling with their identities at a fictional Ivy League college. Simien cleverly creates characters who initially appear to be archetypal, but eventually reveal flaws and complexities. (Hell, even most of the white characters turn out to be more pitiable than nefarious.) Even when it ambitiously raises more questions than it answers (I kinda think that was Simien's intention), this movie serves as a long-overdue reminder of how hard it is for black people to be themselves not only around white people, but around other black people too.
