Deafheaven, Tribulation

When: Sun., Nov. 8, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $18-$20

Both Deafheaven and Tribulation have emerged as heavy metal's preferred lightning rods for praise and persecution this year. For Deafheaven, both have been a long time coming, as the band has steadily been refining its unapologetic mix of black metal's power, post-rock's melodrama and shoegaze's hyper-distorted prettiness. New Bermuda, the band's big-deal debut for the ANTI- label, has caused much hand-wringing in and out of the metal communities. In the end, it's a good record that's occasionally great, especially when all of the grandeur gets swallowed inside breathless black metal rushes. And on the new The Children of the Night, one of the year's best records, Sweden's Tribulation complete the transition from death metal miscreants to melodious darlings. They use their past as an anchor for hooks that seem lifted from metal's golden beginnings and textures that nod appreciatively to prog and Pink Floyd. At their best, both bands are absorbing enough for major crossover—a condition, of course, that almost always leads to lightning-rod status in such closely guarded scenes. 8 p.m.,
