Day of the Dead 5K & street festival

When: Sat., Oct. 25 2014

CENTRO—When it comes to spirits and costumes, Halloween isn't the only game in town. The concurrent Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, where departed friends and family are honored with altars decked out with sugar skulls, marigolds and mementos, is celebrated around the world. Raleigh restaurant Centro hosts its 4th annual Day of the Dead 5k run in partnership with the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club, supporting its afterschool programs for Latin-American students. You can run yourself or sponsor a child. You can also leave offerings at altars in Oakwood Cemetery and on Wilmington Street. This year, the race expands into a festival featuring a 100-yard dash for kids, live music, food trucks, local beer, face-painting and a costume contest. And after you run, why not take a cool-down stroll—make that a shamble—in the Raleigh Zombie Walk, which begins in Moore Square at 7 p.m. and benefits the American Red Cross? That's a whole day of costumed, charitable exercise and fun. Noon, $25, 106 S. Wilmington St., 919-835-3593, —Brian Howe
