DAWN OF THE DEAD AND SHOCK WAVES

FRIDAY, MARCH 20, DURHAM

THE CAROLINA THEATRE—George Romero more or less invented the modern zombie movie in 1968 with Night of the Living Dead, and then defined the zombie apocalypse a decade later with Dawn of the Dead, bringing trenchant satire to the breakdown of society. Fleeing flesh-craving "ghouls," a group of survivors barricades itself into that last bastion of civilization ... a shopping mall. Things naturally go south fast, not least of which is the sight of zombies riding escalators. This rare big-screen showing is paired with a lesser-known yet still pretty innovative 1977 zombie flick, Shock Waves, which asks, "What if you were shipwrecked in the vicinity of goggle-wearing, amphibious, genetically-engineered Nazi zombies?" This is why cinema exists, to answer questions like that. And to have zombies ride escalators. 7 p.m., $9, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, www.carolinatheatre.org.Zack Smith
