Enhanced by generous endowments from stellar private collections, the North Carolina Museum of Art boasts a stunning permanent collection. Titian hangs alongside Ellsworth Kelly. Egyptian sarcophagi display near many Rodin pieces. Outside, Yinka Shonibare’s dynamic “Wind Sculpture II” and one of Vollis Simpson’s wondrous whirligigs can be seen in Museum Park. Milquetoast SoCal country-rock band Dawes, which plays the museum’s amphitheatre, only wishes it could create something lasting and interesting. Neither particularly good nor especially compelling, Dawes is overpolished to the point of dullness. They are purely competent—hardly the stuff of fine art. —Patrick Wall
