David Menconi

When: Wed., Oct. 21, 7 p.m. 2015

QUAIL RIDGE BOOKS & MUSIC—Three years after the release of his book Ryan Adams: Losering, a Story of Whiskeytown, longtime News & Observer music critic David Menconi has co-authored a new book about the multiple Grammy-winning country band Asleep at the Wheel. The title's a mouthful: Comin' Right at Ya: How a Jewish Yankee Hippie Went Country, or, the Often Outrageous History of Asleep at the Wheel. Menconi helps Asleep co-founder Ray Benson document the story of his seminal '70s Western swing-leaning act, which shook up country music and laid the foundation for dozens of Americana outfits in its wake. Expect Menconi to discuss the outfit's curious beginnings as well as its four-decade legacy. 7 p.m., free, 3522 Wade Ave., Raleigh, 919-530-6932, www.quailridgebooks.com. —Allison Hussey
