All of us concerned with this issue should be armed with the information in Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett's "The Spirit Level: Why Income Equality Makes Societies Stronger."
Their compelling thesis is that greater income inequality directly correlates to societal ills.
Countries like the U.S. whose income inequality is almost unparalleled, are are worse off in terms of life expectancy, math & literacy, infant mortality, homicides, imprisonment, teenage births, trust, obesity, mental illness (incl. drug & alcohol addiction) and social mobility.
The link takes you to graphs that are hard to argue with (although many have tried).
