David Howard

When: Sun., July 18, 3 p.m. 2010

This is fascinating: North Carolina's copy of the Bill of Rights, presented to the state in 1789, disappeared when Gen. William T. Sherman's forces raided Raleigh, and it wasn't returned until 2007. It was sold to a man named Charles Shotwell for $5 in 1866, remained a family heirloom for 124 years, and wasn't authenticated until a furniture dealer from Antiques Roadshow took a look at it. David Howard's book of this saga, Lost Rights: The Misadventures of a Stolen American Relic, chronicles not only the history of this document but also of the Bill of Rights, and the strange world of historical-document traders. Howard will read from and sign copies of Lost Rights starting at 3 p.m. —Zack Smith
