Dave Tompkins

When: Fri., Nov. 12, 7 p.m. 2010

Dave Tompkins just can't get enough of the Triangle. Back in June, the rap critic and former Indy contributor visited Raleigh; this time, he's hitting up Chapel Hill to promote How to Wreck a Nice Beach, his boisterous history of the Vocoder and other voice-synthesis technologies. The book documents how the Vocoder began as a cryptographic military tool before entering popular culture—via science fiction, early hip-hop and electro—as a deathless trope for post-human freakiness. His chatty, slangy prose suggests that he'll be an excellent raconteur. The talk and book signing starts at 7 p.m., followed by an after-party at Bowbarr in Carrboro. Let's hope they've got Jonzun Crew's "Pack Jam" on the jukebox. —Brian Howe
