Dave Koz & Friends (Oleta Adams, Jonathan Butler, Keiko Matsui)

When: Tue., Dec. 3, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $42-125
After working as a session player and Richard Marx sideman, Dave Koz superseded Kenny G as the go-to smooth jazz sax man. His approach recalls that of David Sanborn—tough around the edges with soul groove. As Koz's stature has grown, he's pushed further afield. To wit, 2010's Hello Tomorrow features collaborations with Keb' Mo' on the Neil Young-like "There's a Better Way," Lee Ritenour on the crackling jazz-funk tune "Put the Top Down" and Herb Alpert on the dreamy pop number "This Guy's in Love With You." His latest, Summer Horns, splits the fairway with rather innocuous instrumental takes on Chicago, The Beatles and James Brown. At this show, he'll go for the seasonal spirit with a crew of collaborators, including Oleta Adams, Jonathan Butler and Keiko Matsui. —Chris Parker
