Comedy

Tina Fey and Steve Carell star in this slapstick about a couple whose regular date night turns awry when they are mistaken for a couple of blackmailers while dining out. It turns out that their marriage could use a little freshening up and with a conveniently placed plot twist, the self-described "boring" couple gets a taste of New York City's fast and furious underworld of crime (Ray Liotta, James Franco and Mila Kunis make cameos as the riff-raff). But the magnetic pull of the film doesn't exist in its borrowed plot (an ounce of Hitchcock's North-by-Northwest mistaken identity conundrum and a sprinkle of Arthur Hiller's The Out of Towners, shaken and stirred) or the smash-mouth action editing. Instead, Fey and Carell's rhythmic flow supplies the charm as the two entertainers add spice (and flash; the film's end involves a stripper pole) to an otherwise tepid feature.
