Darren Hanlon, Shelley Short

When: Thu., March 31, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $8-10

A charismatic performer and extraordinarily gifted lyricist, Australian singer-songwriter Darren Hanlon possesses a sly wit and gracious humility. He's like Elliott Smith in a good mood; there's a grace and beauty to his strummy folk that disguises the cutting poignancy. The warmth of the melodies suggests early Go-Betweens or maybe the Chills. Despite his relative anonymity in America, he's spent the last dozen years as a solo artist with five releases after a half-dozen years leading the Simpletons. He's supporting his first release for Yep Roc, the wonderful I Will Love You At All. Shelley Short opens. —Chris Parker
