Nashville's Darrell Scott was already one of the most respected and accomplished songwriters in Music City even before he got handpicked by Robert Plant to be in Plant's recent Band of Joy project (alongside Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller). The Dixie Chicks nabbed his tune "Long Time Gone" for the title track of their 2002 release, and his heart-stopping ballad "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" has earned emotional readings from Patty Loveless, Brad Paisley, Kathy Mattea and others. On his own, he's released more than a half-dozen discs, including this year's Long Ride Home. —Peter Blackstock
