Dark Water Rising, The Inlaws

When: Sat., July 13, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $7-10

The term "rocky soul" aptly describes the music of Dark Water Rising, an indie quintet from the swampy backwaters of Robeson County. Carried aloft by the vocals of frontwoman Charly Lowry, DWR's originals lean on electric hard rock and storytelling. Indeed, the band sometimes shifts entirely into folky, strummed acoustic and hand percussion. They express their Lumbee heritage when Lowry spits a cappella lyrics on "Brownskin" and performs powwow-style shawl dancing on stage. The Inlaws open. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
