Dark Water Rising, Jim Avett CD release

When: Wed., Feb. 8, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $7

Robeson County's Dark Water Rising blends R&B and folk, tinging it with three-part gospel harmonies. Charly Lowry leads the six-piece through dense soulful ballads with sultry vocals. Their self-titled LP pays tribute to the group's strong Lumbee roots, especially on the slow burner "Brownskin." After years of welding all over the East Coast, Jim Avett retired back to his North Carolina home in Concord and decided to play classic country. This will be a release party for Avett's third album, Second Chance. The $7 show starts at 9 p.m. —Ashleigh Phillips
