Carolina Theatre—Celebrate two of the lesser-seen works of John Carpenter, one of genre cinema's most idiosyncratic and entertaining directors, at this month's Retrofantasma. Before Halloween, Escape From New York or The Thing, there was Dark Star, Carpenter's 1974 feature debut about a ship full of bored spacemen who contend with a talking bomb. Co-written by Dan O'Bannon, who recycled many elements for his later screenplay for Alien, it put Carpenter on the map as a filmmaker who could do more with less.

The second half of the double bill is 1987's Prince of Darkness, Carpenter's first independent production since Escape From New York, about ... well, it's hard to say exactly what it's about, though the words "liquid Satan" come to mind. Carpenter wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym "Martin Quatermass," in homage to the famous British TV serial Quatermass and the Pit, which helped inspire the story. Though this is an oddball entry in Carpenter's oeuvre, it's rarely seen on the big screen, meaning this is a treat for Carpenter fans.

Tickets for the double feature are $8; Dark Star starts at 7 p.m. and Darkness at 9:30. —Zack Smith
