Writer-director Scott Stewart's sci-fi/ horror wants to provide deep musings about social conflict and primal fear, but it suffers from a schizophrenic script that leaves us wondering what story Stewart wanted to tell in the first place. Narrative discord is established at the start: A suburban family (headed by Josh Hamilton and Keri Russell) is haunted by a specter that leaves a trail of masticated food away from the fridge, steals family photos and looms over their young son's bed at night. The tension between the two possibilities—domestic unease and alienation as a result of either a haunting or extraterrestrials—results in a series of semi-coherent, short-attention-span shocks. Stewart's dynamic visual sensibility makes up somewhat for the film's narrative shortcomings, but not enough to separate Dark Skies from the "look who's in the house" scenarios of Paranormal Activity, The X-Files and Poltergeist.
