Danny Barnes

When: Wed., March 30, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $10-13

That Danny Barnes' most recent album, Pizza Box, found a home at ATO Records—the highest-profile label this banjo genius has ever been associated with—is a welcome sign that some things are still going up amid a down time in the music biz. Barnes earned his stripes in the Austin roots scene in the early '90s before launching the Bad Livers, an adventurous roots trio that borrowed as much from punk as from bluegrass. He's continued to push boundaries as a solo artist in the last decade, though Pizza Box has some broadly accessible elements, too, with ATO boss Dave Matthews even singing along. —Peter Blackstock
