Daniel Rossen, William Tyler

When: Fri., April 11, 8:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $16-$18

If you don't know the name Danny Rossen, you might at least recognize the voice from its star role in Grizzly Bear. Rossen is the one with the comfortable but anxious croon, the one that suggests a more energetic Elliott Smith, thanks to a mix of low, deep dips and quick, falsetto flits. In 2012, Rossen released Silent Hour/Golden Mile, a well-textured and efficient EP of five songs that arched through drama but pivoted on grand, triumphant refrains. Rossen recorded those tunes during a fraught period for Grizzly Bear, when tour exhaustion and their rising, post-Veckatimest mainstream star bent the band close to the breaking point. But they survived, releasing the excellent Shields shortly after Silent Hour/Golden Mile's arrival. Now, we finally get the chance to see Rossen take those tunes, as well as some unreleased material and a few Grizzly Bear gems, on a proper tour. The guitarist William Tyler opens, though the epithet "the guitarist" is starting to be an understatement for the Nashville player. His forthcoming Merge EP, Lost Colony, finds Tyler excelling in the unlikely position of bandleader, leading a proper instrumental rock crew that uses his reflective guitar lines as building blocks toward transcendence. Expect this wonderful double bill to do much the same. —Grayson Haver Currin
