Daniel Davidson: #Movingpictures Reception

When: Fri., Nov. 7, 7 p.m. 2014

LUMP—The illustrative style of Brooklyn artist Daniel Davidson's drawings and paintings has shades of Pop Art and the underground comics of Robert Crumb, with sweetly grotesque figures or surreal environments crowding close-up frames. His work has shifted in recent years to emphasize an errant duplication that makes me think of Borges' horror at mirrors' "spectral multiplication of reality, their infallible and continuous functioning, their pursuit of my actions, their cosmic pantomime." In his artist's statement, Davidson links this imagery to "over-consumption." In "Jazzy 2," a chain comes out of a gun to divide the plane between two facing figures, rendered with different techniques but both in layers of motion, so their eyes become spider-like stacks. A yellow fat man in the corner and a sweating glass on the counter drive home the theme of too-much-ness. The piece is in Davidson's first Lump solo show, alongside projected drawing animations, a sequence of collaged drawings, a series of photos called "One Sided Love" and more. After this First Friday reception, the exhibit can be seen through Nov. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and by appointment during the week. 7–10 p.m., free, 505 S. Blount St., 919-889-2927, www.teamlump.org. —Brian Howe
