DANCE COMPANHIA URBANA DE DANÇA | Duke Campus: Reynolds Industries Theater | Stage | Indy Week
This is a past event.

When: Fri., Nov. 7, 8 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 8, 8 p.m. 2014

REYNOLDS INDUSTRIES THEATER—Duke Performances and the Duke Dance Program host the hot dance theatre troupe Comphania Urbana de Dança from Rio for a four-day residency that includes a public discussion and free open rehearsal in addition to two performances. Street dance forms have fed theater dance forms in many ways over the decades. But the ferocious, virtuosic contemporary street dancing from Brazil seems more likely to eat the theater than to feed it. Artistic director Sonia Destri Lie and the company will discuss the aesthetics of, and the activism inherent in, their explosive blend of street dance and martial arts at noon on Thursday; Duke anthropologist and capoeira instructor Katya Wesolowski will moderate this unusual opportunity to zoom in on another culture. 8 p.m., $10–$34, 125 Science Dr., 919-684-4444, —Kate Dobbs Ariail
